Arunachal evades NHPC payment, owes Rs 500+ Cr.
[ Taba Ajum ]
ITANAGAR, Oct 28: The government of Arunachal which took a loan of Rs 225 crore in 2007 from National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) to revive the ailing Arunachal Pradesh Cooperative Apex Bank Limited has not been able to return the loan amount till now accruing huge amount of interest.
Due to delay in returning the money, massive interest has been accumulated and as per the record available till 30/09/2016, the amount has risen to Rs 5,003, 569, 605(Five hundred crore, thirty five lakh, sixty nine thousand six hundred five).
The government of Arunachal under Late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu availed the loan at 9% interest per annum. The loan was taken against two NHPC projects- Dibang Multi Purpose Project (3000 MW) and Tawang stage- I & II (600 & 800 MW).
The NHPC authority has been writing to the government of Arunachal reminding them about the loan on a regular basis.
At the time of availing loan, the then Chief Minister of Arunachal Late Dorjee Khandu had promised to revive Apex Bank and also construct a law college at Jote.
But questions remain about the use of loan amount.
"Around Rs 170 crore was required at that time to revive the Apex Bank. Though government borrowed from NHPC with the promise to revive Apex Bank but condition of bank has not improved much. On the other hand, the state government had promised to start a government law college. But sadly it looks like the money has been badly misused," shared an official.
He went on to add, "With each passing month and year, the interest is getting accumulated and loan amount will subsequently increase. This is really worrisome. The state government was hoping to pay back the money to NHPC from 12% free power that Arunachal is supposed to receive from Subansiri Lower Hydropower Project. But unfortunately the Subansiri project is going nowhere due to opposition from Assam based NGOs."
Late Khandu had even promised to take action, including criminal action, auction of property of all the loan defaulters, who had obtained loan from Apex Bank through fraudulent means irrespective of their status. However, the majority of loan defaulters are still roaming free while some have gone on to become MLAs, ministers and powerful businessmen.

China bullies India, says Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal may damage ties
BEIJING, Oct 28: China today warned India that bilateral ties may suffer "damage" and affect peace and stability of the border areas if it allows Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama to visit Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims is part of southern Tibet.
"We are seriously concerned about the relevant information," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told a media briefing here replying to a question about reports that India has granted permission to Dalai Lama to visit Arunachal Pradesh at the invitation of the Chief Minister.
"China's position on the eastern section of China India border is consistent and clear. The Dalai clique is engaged in anti-China separatist activity and has very disgraceful behaviour on issues relating to China-India boundary question," Kang said.
The Indian side is well aware of the severity of the Dalai Lama issue as well as the sensitivity of the China-India boundary question, he said.
"Under such circumstances India's invitation to the Dalai Lama for activity in the disputed areas between China and India will only damage peace, stability of the border areas as well as the bilateral relationship between China and India," Kang said.
"We require the Indian side to honour the political commitment to Tibet-related issues and abide by the bilateral consensus on boundary question," he said.
India also should "refrain from taking any action that may complicate the issue, do not provide any platform for anti-China separatist activities by the 14th Dalai Lama," he said.
"Only by doing so can we maintain sound and steady growth of the bilateral relations," he added.
Asked about assertions by External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup that Dalai Lama has visited the state in the past, Kang said "making one mistake does not mean that you can make another mistake".
"As I just said, India's invitation to the Dalai Lama for activity in the disputed area between China and India is like providing a platform for anti-China separatist activities. It does no good to peace and tranquility in the border areas as well as the development of China-India relations," he said.
China considers Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet and routinely objects to visits by Dalai Lama, Indian leaders as well as foreign dignitaries.
The border dispute covers the 3,488-km long Line of Actual Control (LAC).
India asserts that the dispute covered Aksai Chin area which was occupied by China during 1962 war.
On October 24, China took exception to the visit by Richard Verma, the US envoy in India, to Arunachal Pradesh  saying any interference by Washington in the Sino-India boundary dispute will make it "more complicated" and "disturb" hard-won peace at the border. PTI

India should be cautious

The Tibetan spiritual leader Dala Lama’s proposed visit to Arunachal next year has run into controversy. As expected the China has expressed deep concern over visit and has warned that visit will negatively affect Indo-China relation. Beijing has made it clear that bilateral ties may suffer "damage" and peace and stability of the border areas could be affected if India allows Dalai Lama to continue with his visit plan. Recently Chief Minister Pema Khandu had meet Tibetan spiritual leader at Delhi and invited him to visit Arunachal.

The union government on Friday cleared the deck for the proposed visit. Soon after that China started raising objection. The neighbouring country has recently objected the visit of US Ambassador Richard Verma to Tawang. China claims Arunachal as part of south Tibet and has never accepted the present international boundary. Beijing considers Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama who fled Tibet in 1959 as a separatist. The idea of a so called anti-China separatist visiting a state which they claim is deeply traumatizing the Beijing. That’s the reason they are sounding hurtful and is issuing threat to India. Dalai Lama is guest in India and he is free to visit any part of country. Also sizeable numbers of Buddhist believers in Tawang follows his teachings and will be eager to welcome him. But India should be cautious while dealing with an erratic and powerful neighbour like China.  Confrontation should be avoided at any cost. After years of hostilities, in the last few years both the countries have somehow managed to forget the past and forge a better relation. This hard earned trust should not be wasted as it may take many more years to win back the trust.

Religions have a greater role to play

Dear Editor,

This refers to the article “Religious Trends- No Longer unifying Force” (Arunachal Times: October 21) by Oishee Mukherjee, which judiciously analyzes the politicization of religions in the country.  In fact it is a well perceived thing across the length of the last three decades that religions are no more used as a unifying force for the humanity. Every religion which is rich in its contents advocating the philosophy of spiritual evolution through love and compassion seems to be serving with an adverse effect to the outer world.  Each one is developed with a system of spiritualizing its followers with great values and also capable to bring about greater impact. But what is tragic about the whole theme is that maximum bloodsheds and wars happening in the present day world are in the name of religion. Countries are shattered to pieces, children are orphaned and people are homeless due to the war in the name of religion, yet we call ourselves religious. If a religious philosophy is supreme by itself, it is unnecessary to forcefully propagate it or to get into a war in its name; it would naturally get into the minds of the people.

The most amazing fact about the world around us is that every element of it offers us with something new and unique. Starting from an ant to a flower to a leaf to a butterfly to a human being, everything offers a different experience. It may not be easy for us to perceive the uniqueness that they offer unless we develop that spiritual feeling of oneness which enables us with the capacity to delve into the spiritual realm of the world. The very person sitting beside us, with whom we talk and play every day is a unique being, completely different from the rest of the world and therefore so precious. Nothing which is precious can be troubling, provided we understand its uniqueness, its specialty.  Spirituality, with its multiple levels of thinking and understanding, often teaches us this philosophy of uniqueness which is there in everything. But generally the issue is those who are religious and spiritual under their own definitions seem to be fully forgotten of the fact that religion should be the torchlight which leads its followers to the spiritual space of uniqueness that is there in every element of life. Starting from a newborn baby to a man waiting for the final day of his departure from the world depicts nothing but this unique nature of his being special in this world.  Every religion has the philosophical depth of finding that divine uniqueness in all beings. But most of the spiritual leaders and the religious thinkers biased by political allegiance would intentionally like to float on the top of the religious beliefs and mislead the innocent people into the direction of their choice.

Greater spiritual experiences shared by divine people were never totally accepted or understood by their contemporaries. Though it never happened in India, it was common for the west to malign such teachings in whatever way possible and in some cases they were persecuted or brutally executed.  The life of Jesus and Socrates are appropriate examples.  Paradoxically, it was evident from the fact that such people were later recognized for their divine qualities after their death.  It appears to be so prevalent in many cases where we find religions get into chaotic squabbles than quality dialogues. No religion can bring solace to the world, doesn’t matter how glossy is its philosophy, if it tries to establish itself to be the supreme. Clashes between persons, societies, nations and even civilizations erupt due to this trend of religious superiority across the globe. Though it is a matter of great pride for everyone to announce at the top of their voice about the depth of their religious philosophy, something which is terribly missing is the interlinking reality. When the same energy is manifesting in different forms, where is the scope for chaos and skirmishes between religions on petty issues. In India it was a fact discovered ages ago by the sages and accepted and accentuated by the scientists in modern days. When the energy behind a laughing face and crying face is one, and the same energy is relentlessly playing in a dog and a cow and a crow and a flower, why is it applicable to have fights in the name of the supreme reality?  Therefore it is essential to know that the religions are to mend and amend their ways of reaching out to the hearts of their followers with more sensible definitions and accuracy on spirituality.

The vedic thoughts propounded by the people of yore defined divinity the supreme energy as one; “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti” means “Truth is one and people call it by different names.” When this being the reality, it is sad to see the religions, motivated by political intentions, dive into the national system of a country and dictate as to what should be the policy designed for its citizens. When beliefs get radicalized, it is evident that religious institutions turn blind to the sufferings of the people who follow other religions. Historic evidences speak for it as to what was the space and respect provided for Semitic religions in India by the then rulers.  Whichever religions made an entry into this country by whatever means was accepted, respected and assisted by the local populace. In fact India is the only country where different religions could freely flourish because our religious beliefs were all pervasive and compassionate.

Thus, it is important for us to understand as to what a religion is meant for; it is for not to divide but to unite. Religions can definitely act as bridges between races and cultures, unifying them through all pervasive human values such as love, compassion and acceptance for each other. But it is for them to decide as to what they stay for and what they stay away from.

Inspiring tale of Blood donors

Dear Editor,

To start a fire there is a need for a spark and sparks are rare nowadays. I think I found a rare and powerful spark in my life. He goes around motivating, inspiring and igniting the youths. He is Ramesh Jeke, the founder and chairman of Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti.

I am a medical student of North East Homoeopathic Medical College. He came to our college with a proposal to conduct a voluntary blood donation camp as the Capital’s blood stocks were dwindling.

Hence, in the emergence of the Blood needs in the capital our principal gave permission to conduct a voluntary blood donation camp with the help of NSS unit of the college.

But before that there was need to motivate the students for this noble cause. A motivation speech cum awareness programme was organised in which he unfolded the beautiful deeds of his team and achievements. Even being medical student, we never thought of this noble deed. We were really astonished how he managed to work so beautifully. He even showed us the ugly face of Arunachalis who live only for themselves. Many who were present in the hall had tears in their eyes by listening to some painful cases that he and his team faced.

He argued for better work for the society than to humiliate each other in social media.  I liked the idea of unification of Arunachal the most. The team has almost 400 members who are mostly youngsters from the state.

I really appreciate the efforts they make and my heart fills with joy to see these young people taking a big step to change the society. He explained how the team works hard day and night motivating other youths to join the cause and fight for the cause. We were inspired to join the team too.

The team aims that there should not be any patient in a hospital who die because of blood scarcity. The greatest gift for a person is life.  I feel this NGO is the only NGO who really work hard for better of the society. I feel proud to write to your esteemed daily that I found my idol and a noble cause.

There were many more registrations after this beautiful motivational speech. I am really happy to motivate other youths to join the cause of blood donation and give the greatest gift of life.

A voluntary blood donation camp will be setup on 29 October 2016 at North east homoeopathic Medical College Vivek Vihar Tinali, Itanagar and we hope the motivated and ignited youths will surely join us in this noble cause.

Yours,

Student
